About Imperial Beach
Imperial Beach gets its name from Imperial County- where the farmers and landowners ventured west to find cooler weather in the hot summer months. The beach community has something to offer everyone, friends and family, and kids.
Some Lesser Known Facts About Imperial Beach
- There are many spots to explore on and around the beach. It has many attractions like the Imperial Beach Pier, Veteran?s park, Mickie?s bar, and grill to grab a bite or a drink, a store called seaside candy and you guessed it, it sells candy by the seaside.
- The Tijuana River National Estuarine Research Reserve is a natural reserve not far from the beach. One can visit and spend time bird-watching. There are as many as 370 bird species, both native and migrating. Schools often organize trips to the reserve for nature classes for the kids.
- In the year 1910, the first-ever fishing piers were installed by the South San Diego Investment Company. There was also a two-block long boardwalk and a bathhouse. They eventually washed away. As a result of storms during winter in the years 1949 and 1953, respectively.
- Another fun activity one can participate in is whale watching. This tour gets you closer to dolphins, whales, and also other beautiful sea creatures. If you're not into sea creatures or not a swimmer, there are numerous trails to go hiking on as well.

- Its reputation as a hotspot for exercise and activity has found its way into popular culture as well. The HBO television series "John from Cincinnati" was about a dysfunctional surfing family. It is based in the Imperial beach neighborhood and was filmed here as well. Kem Nunn's novel, "Tijuana Straits" focuses on the culture of the border and surfing in Imperial Beach and the Tijuana River Valley.
