With more than 17 miles of coast lining the Pacific, San Diego is a beach lover's paradise. Coronado beach is one of the best beaches in the state. Coronado is translated from Spanish which means "crowned one". The resort city of Coronado is often dubbed as the Crowned city. The tour of a continuous mile-long stretch of golden beach, dramatic sunsets, and a family-friendly environment is not a bad way to spend one's day.
Some Lesser Known Facts About Coronado Beach
- In the year 1885, the Coronado Beach Company was found for the purpose of the development of the peninsula as a town and resort destination. Before that, the land remained unused for centuries.
- When one thinks of Coronado, what typically comes to mind first is the iconic Hotel del Coronado and the picturesque Coronado Bridge. The hotel has remained a famous attraction and hosted a number of famous personalities. Some of these are Rita Hayworth, Thomas Edison, Charles Lindbergh, more than a dozen U.S. Presidents, Charlie Chaplin, Clark Gable, Douglas Fairbanks, etc.
- Frank Baum, author of the infamous Wizard of Oz lived near Star Park. So one can see his house while there. It is said that hotel Del Coronado was supposedly a source of inspiration. One can go to the free museum downtown and see three first editions of his famous books there as well.
- Voted among the best beaches in California multiple times, the Coronado remains busy with the flow of visitors. The beach is flat with a broad strip of sand between the boardwalk and ocean, which means even on busy days, one can spread out.
- The mineral called mica causes the sand here to glimmer. One can notice little flecks of gold shimmer best in the swash and calmer knee-deep water before the waves break.
- People participate in fun activities like surfing, beachcombing, boogie boarding, etc. You will also find some people sunbathing or riding bikes that are available for rental. One can also tide pool during the low tides in winter, in front of the hotel Del Coronado.
- The Hotel del Coronado has an area close to the resort called Del Beach. Here, visitors can rent chairs and cabinets and enjoy food and drink service to the sand! There are also a limited amount of beach wheelchairs available for the comfort of the specially-able visitors.
