About Cardiff by the sea
Cardiff by the sea or sometimes simply referred to as Cardiff is a beach community situated in San Diego County. It borders Solana Beach to the south, the Pacific Ocean to the west with Encinitas on its east and north. Cardiff is a part of Encinitas district, it is a lovely seaside village and makes for a pleasant trip just 25 miles north of San Diego.
Some Lesser Known Facts About Cardiff by the sea
- Its first residents were the native people called the Kumeyaay, also referred to as Diegueño by the Spanish. The natives were the Yuman-speaking people of Hokan stock. They lived in the region for more than 10,000 years. The Kumeyaay people were horticulturists, hunters, and gatherers.

- It was founded by J. Frank Cullen, a painter from Boston who would later become a developer. It is said that he wanted to give the town a Spanish name but it was named Cardiff after the city in his wife?s native Wales. There are also streets with similar names like "Birmingham", "Oxford", "Chesterfield" and "Manchester".

- The "by-the-Sea" was added to the name by German musician Victor Kremer, who allegedly took it from the song "By the Beautiful Sea". Also, The Cardiff Composer District includes 12 streets named for musicians like Mozart, Verdi, Chopin, Rubinstein, etc.

- A popular spot in Cardiff is ?The Reef?. It is a surf spot in Cardiff that produces waves both professional and novice surfers enjoy year-round. When there are low tides, a flat rock reef is revealed that extends 50 yards from shore.

- The beaches are beautiful and one can spend their time engaging in activities like surfing, sunbathing, kite flying or just enjoying the views. Glen Park, on Orinda Drive, offers a nice play area for young kids, and horseshoes, basketball, tennis, and beach volleyball.

- With over 20 restaurants in the downtown area, there are many spots for refreshment and to grab a bite and few drinks. One can also visit the San Diego Botanic Garden and The Self-Realization Temple.

- There are more than 170 campsites at the San Elijo Park which features fire rings and picnic tables. Other attractions include the Cardiff-by-the-sea library, The confessional by the Lost abbey which is a popular restaurant, and the Eli Howard surf school.
