About Blacks Beach
The black's beach is a clothing-optional beach located in the La Jolla area in San Diego. It is a part of Torrey Pines beach. It's become a beloved surf spot for locals and remains pretty famous for its defining characteristic as a nude beach.
Some Lesser Known Facts About Blacks Beach
- It is said that the beach is named after the black family that moved to La Jolla sometime in the late 1940s. They bought roughly 248 acres on Torrey Pines cliffs alongside a canyon that lead to the beach. The land was used as a horse farm but it never became as successful as they wanted it to be, so the family sold the land, and today is known as the La Jolla farms.

- It is said that the first group to ever surf Black?s Beach included longtime surfers Peter Lusic, Don Roncy, John Light, and Joe Trotter in the year 1959.

- A submarine canyon funnels lead to Black's Beach, making it appealing to surfers but dangerous for inexperienced swimmers. It is also considered a bit difficult to reach the destination. There are multiple routes, but they all involve a bit of rock scrambling and a steep climb.

- In the 60s, the Blacks Beach road down was preferred by the surfers, which was always under the protection of William Black. Apparently, he was known to fire a shotgun loaded with rock salt at trespassers!

- The Ho Chi Minh trail ends here. It is a treacherous and narrow climb down, this trail starts up at La Jolla Farms and winding through the cliffs to get to the beach. It was named after the trail in Vietnam.

- It is one of the largest nude beaches in California and was popular among the nudists and naturists of the 70s. Until the year 1977, the area of the beach in the city was "swimsuit optional". In the same year, nudity was prohibited on that part of the beach.

- There were several years when people would come to Black's Beach on the night of a full moon and hold a Drum Circle, hosted by a group called the Rainbow Family. They would build fires, sing and dance around it and leave before dawn leaving no trace of the night.
