Pompeii was an ancient city that was resided by a human from the 7th century BC to the 1st century AD. The city was abandoned after a volcanic eruption in AD 79. It was buried under the volcanic ash and pumice up to 4 to 6 meters. The area covered by the site is about 170 acres. It became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997. It is also an important tourist attraction alongside other places in Italy. It is visited by about 2.5 million visitors every year.
